Now of course the primary school year has already started for most people, but getting through these last few weeks has been as crazy as it has been inspirational. Each school year no matter how long you have been in the job it’s always the same: every new class offers new challenges, changes to curriculum and educational resources arrive unannounced and there is never enough time to do everything you want to do to get to know your class as well as you might have liked.
To help inspire you in future first days, here are some great back to school activity suggestions. (You can actually use these any time come to think of it…)
Get To Know You Games
Games that allow you and all the students to get know each other’s names are a great ice breaker. They allow each one of them to get some attention and let you get an idea of what they are going to be like.
Scrabble – Create a load of scrabble letters out of white paper and get students to put their names on a big sheet one at a time until everyone’s name has its place.
Portraits – A simple take on art and crafts for kids, pair kids up and have them all draw silhouette pictures of each other. Then have them ask questions to find out what their likes and dislikes are and all about them and write or draw pictures based on their answers around the image. Stick these around the classroom and look at them again together towards the end of the year.
Me Sack – Introduce yourself to the class with a sack with 5 items from home that tell them things about you, e.g. favourite book, picture of family. Then issue them all with sacks and have them bring in 5 items of their own the next day to introduce them to the class.
Name Bingo – Print off a blank bingo card for each of the students. Have them walk around the class room asking as many kids as they can for their name so they can write it in a box, until all their boxes are full. Then you pick random names out of the register (or a hat if you have time) as the children cross names out until there is a winner.
Giant Puzzle – Get a huge piece of paper and cut it up into randomly shaped pieces, number the same as the number of kids in the class. Give them out and have them write their name big and a few things about themselves. Then get them to swap pieces and then put the puzzle back together on the wall.
Do you have any first day tips that work for you?
